Chinese demand continues to boom
Production and sales will increase by 20% in 2005, predicts CMTBA
The Chinese demand for machine tools and tooling is set to continue with strong growth through 2005, according to data released on Saturday by the Chinese Machine Tool Manufacturers Association (CMTBA). According to the CMTBA figures for the first six months of 2005, China imported US$ 4,79 billion worth of machine tools and tooling, registering a 22,2% increase on figures for the same period in the previous year. Reflecting growing demand for high-tech products, the number of machines imported grew in the period by just 0,6%, said Prof. Wu Bo Lin, CEO of CMTBA. For the full-year, CMTBA predicts imports of US$ 6,5 billion.
The growth in output of the domestic industry is even more impressive: In the first half of 2005, production value reached 60 billion Yuan, up more than 30% on the same period in 2004. CMTBA prediction for the full-year is that both production and sales will increase by more than 20%, with total output tipped to exceed 120 billion Yuan. According to CMTBA figures for 2004, domestic producers are also growing in size with 2000 domestic machine tool and tooling manufacturers recording annual sales of more than 5 million Yuan (about 500 000 Euro).
The country 11th Five Year Plan, which will come into effect in early spring next year will further drive demand and consumption. By then, many key end-users will have their purchasing funds ready and will begin to draft purchasing plans, said Wu. The six sectors covered by the plan are aviation and aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive, defense technology, general machinery and information technology. The plan is also focussed regionally, with revamping the industrial base in the northeast of China of particular significance to the machine tool industry. kf
