    ManuFuture program powers European manufacturing
    With an 18% share, Europe currently dominates international trade in manufactured goods. And, in doing so, manufacturing directly provides 27 million jobs in the European economy and powers many more in the service economy. In an attempt to ensure that Europe sustains a competitive edge in manufacturing technology, European industry has gotten behind the European Union ManuFuture Initiative, which, it is hoped, will guide the allocation of resources in the 7th Framework program. According to Prof. Heinrich Flegel, Chairman of the ManuFuture High Level Group, the complete results of the ManuFuture Initiative should be  available by the end of next year.
    Speaking at the opening Cecimo Press Conference at EMO yesterday, Flegel, who is also a board member of Daimler Chrysler, underlined the importance of the initiative. he strategic goal is to enable a competitive and sustainable European manufacturing industry with global leadership in high added value products and services.,?he  said.  The Initiative has been divided into five working groups and three higher level groups. Two of the five working groups,  鉚echnologies Beyond Borders?and 鉏nnovating Production? are led by Prof. Westk妋per from Fraunhofer.
    The immediate task of all of the groups is to identify areas of research and innovation with high potential breakthrough that are only achieveable at European level. 鉝e are not looking for peanuts,?Flegel states.
    The adoption of the Strategic Research Agenda developed by the High Level Groups is scheduled to take place at the ManuFuture Conference in Derby, U.K. on December 7. The first implementation plans will also be presented at the conference.
    In Germany, a national ManuFuture platform is being coordinated by VDMA, which is also providing the liasion in Brussels through its European Office. At EMO, both Cecimo and VDMA can provide further information on the ManuFuture Initiative. kf
